How to undo file changes made by ChatGPT Work
Keep the edit you asked for, undo the one you didn't. How to review and roll back what ChatGPT Work changed in a Mac folder - file by file.

The fastest way to undo it
If CoworkRestore was watching the folder, open it from the Mac menu bar, pick the project, and find the snapshot from just before the ChatGPT Work task. Open it, spot the file you want back in the changed-files list, and choose restore this file - the good edits stay, the bad one is undone. If you need to reverse everything, restore the whole snapshot instead.
If nothing was watching the folder, don’t keep working in it yet. Jump to the section on recovering without snapshots - the Trash, Time Machine, and cloud history are your best shot, and new writes are what overwrite them.
Immediate answer
Undoing a file change from ChatGPT Work depends on one thing: whether anything was keeping earlier versions of the file. ChatGPT Work itself edits files on your Mac, but it doesn’t hand you a file-level undo - the chat transcript tells you what it did, not how to take it back. The version history has to come from somewhere else.
The cleanest source is a tool that was already saving versions of the folder. CoworkRestore does exactly that: it works alongside ChatGPT Work by watching the folders you hand it and quietly saving snapshots as changes settle. When a task goes wrong, you open the snapshot from before it, and restore either one file or the whole folder. If you didn’t have that running, the rest of this guide covers the Mac-level fallbacks - and how to make the next task reversible.
If CoworkRestore was already watching the folder
This is the easy path. Because CoworkRestore saves versions as changes settle, a snapshot from before the ChatGPT Work task almost certainly exists. You never have to know anything about how the versions are stored under the hood.
- Open CoworkRestore from the menu bar and select the folder ChatGPT Work edited. You’ll see its snapshot history, newest at the top.
- Find the snapshot from just before the task. When CoworkRestore protects a folder used by ChatGPT Work, it watches for changes and saves a version once they settle, so look for the last snapshot whose timestamp is just before you asked ChatGPT Work to do the thing that went wrong.
- Don’t restore yet - inspect it first. Opening the snapshot shows you exactly which files changed, so you can decide whether one file or the whole folder needs to go back.
A quick note on scope: ChatGPT Work compatibility here is folder watching only. There’s no ChatGPT extension and no account to connect - CoworkRestore simply protects the folder on your Mac. The before-and-after-task snapshots you may have read about elsewhere are a Claude Cowork feature; with ChatGPT Work, the snapshots come from watching the folder itself.
How to inspect the affected snapshot
Restoring blind is how you lose the good edits along with the bad one. Before you touch anything, look at what changed.
- Open the changed-files list. Each file ChatGPT Work touched is marked as added, modified, or deleted. Scan it to confirm the damage matches what you expected.
- Compare a file with its earlier version. You can see a file as it was in the snapshot next to how it looks now, so you’re sure you’re bringing back the right one.
- Note which edits you want to keep. If ChatGPT Work did five good things and one bad one, you only need to reverse the bad file - make a mental list before you start.

Restore one file while keeping the good changes
This is the move most people actually want. ChatGPT Work rewrote one document badly, but the rest of the task was fine.
- In the opened snapshot, find the one file you want back in the changed-files list.
- Choose restore this file. CoworkRestore replaces the current version with the version from that snapshot and leaves every other file untouched.
- Everything else ChatGPT Work changed in that task stays exactly as it is - you keep the good edits and undo only the one you didn’t want.
A restore is itself reversible. CoworkRestore takes a safety snapshot before it changes anything, so if you brought back the wrong version you can undo the restore until the next snapshot lands on top.
Restore the whole folder
Sometimes the whole task was a mistake - ChatGPT Work reorganized broadly, renamed dozens of files, or edited more than you can cherry-pick. In that case, rewind everything.
- Select the snapshot from just before the task and choose restore the whole snapshot.
- The entire folder returns to how it looked at that moment - every file ChatGPT Work added, changed, or deleted goes back at once.
- If that wasn’t right either, undo the restore. Because a safety snapshot was taken first, the reversal is one click away until the next snapshot arrives.
If the folder was a Desktop or Downloads cleanup that went sideways, the sibling guide on undoing a ChatGPT Work reorganization walks through the reshuffle case specifically.
If CoworkRestore was not installed
Honest answer: no snapshot tool can recover what it wasn’t watching. CoworkRestore can’t help with a change that happened before you installed it or before you added the folder. What you do have is the Mac itself - work this list in order and stop at the first thing that returns your file.
- Trash. If ChatGPT Work deleted or replaced a file, open Finder → Trash and sort by Date Added. Right-click → Put Back returns it to its original location. Don’t empty the Trash until you’ve checked everything else.
- Time Machine. If a Time Machine drive is connected, open the folder in Finder and choose Enter Time Machine from the menu-bar icon. Step back to before the task and restore. Even with no drive attached, macOS often keeps local hourly snapshots on the internal disk for about a day.
- Cloud version history. If the folder syncs to iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive, open that service’s web app. All of them keep earlier versions and deleted files for at least 30 days, and let you restore a specific version of a single file.
- Application-specific history. If ChatGPT Work edited a document you also work on in another app, that app may hold its own history - Word and Excel keep AutoRecover versions, Pages and Numbers keep a Browse All Versions option under File, and many editors keep local recovery copies.
Once you’ve recovered what you can - or accepted the loss - the point is to make sure the next task can’t catch you the same way.
What CoworkRestore can and cannot do here
- Can: restore any file, in any captured version, from a folder it was watching when ChatGPT Work made the change.
- Can: undo a single file while leaving every other edit in place, or roll the whole folder back at once.
- Cannot: recover anything from before it was installed or before you added the folder - there’s no retroactive history.
- Cannot: prevent a bad ChatGPT Work change. It lets you inspect and reverse what was captured, not stop it from happening.
- Cannot: replace Time Machine or a full-disk backup. It watches the specific folders you choose, locally, on your Mac - and it’s Mac-only, with no cloud copy.
How to protect the next task
The reason undoing a ChatGPT Work change is easy or nearly impossible comes down to one decision you make before the task: was anything saving versions of the folder? Set that up once and every future task is reviewable and reversible.
- Add the folder to CoworkRestore and choose folder watching. From then on it saves versions as changes settle in the folders ChatGPT Work touches. The first project is free; one license, one-time from €19, covers unlimited projects.
- Keep working folders out of iCloud “Optimize Storage.” When macOS evicts local copies to save space, an AI tool can read an empty placeholder instead of the real file. Work in a plain local folder, or turn Optimize off for the one you use.
- Run risky tasks on a copy first. For a big reorganization, duplicate the folder and let ChatGPT Work loose on the copy so you can compare before committing to the real one.
